Jan K. Labanowski

Jan Labanowski interests span a broad area of computer applications in chemistry and biology. He graduated from Jagiellonian University in Krakow with M.S. in Theoretical Chemistry and M.S. in Plant Biochemistry, where he also completed his Ph.D. in Cell Biology. While familiar with the bench, his true love (but not the only one) is computers. After coming to US in 1981, he jumped on the bandwagon of Molecular Modeling splitting his time between research work in Departments of Physiology and Biophysics and Computer Science at The Washington University in St.  Louis, and computational chemistry software development at the newly established company, Tripos Associates, interleaving this with his appointment at the Research Labs of American Red Cross in Detroit. He finally settled in Columbus Ohio with a joint appointment in the Ohio Supercomputer Center and the OSU College of Pharmacy. After over 15 years at OSU he decided to undertake a new challenge of managing the Science Computer Facility at the University of Notre Dame, but returned to Columbus after failed attempts to convince his family to move to this beautiful and inspiring community away from the busy and noisy capital city of Ohio. He is currently self employed as an independent consultant and busy with a challenging computer, enterprise size, project involving Web, text processing and searching, distributed databases, computer security, and scores of bleeding edge technologies. In his free time he continues to manage the Computational Chemistry List, an independent Internet discussion forum that he created in 1991. He also plays piano, gives free advice to his friends, and reads scores of books and web portals of international news agencies trying to understand: How the heck did we get to the point where we are now. But he does not know yet...
